Phyllis Bramson: Always an inspiration

I like when artist share the artist that they like and admire.
An artist that has inspired me for almost nine years now in Phyllis Bramson. Lucky for me a Chicago artist I get the chance to see her work in person from time to time. A few months ago I saw her in a two-person exhibition with Judith Geichman at the Carrie Secrist Gallery (Carrie Secrist Gallery | 835 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago | www.secristgallery.com). The exhibition was up March 20–April 24, 2010.

Phyllis Bramsom work did it for me because she did everything I had been wanting to do and hadn't thought of doing with color and materials. Her imagery was playful, interesting, iconic, and naughty. She inspired me years ago when I saw her work at the Carl Hammer Gallery in the River North Gallery district years ago on a college trip in undergrad. The postcard I took from that show almost eight years ago is still hanging in my studio giving me inspiration.

The image I included was the piece that first inspired me years ago. The photo doesn't do it justice because you can't get a sense of the depth she creates with her collage elements. To see this piece and more of her work visit her website at http://www.phyllisbramson.com/index.htm
This one is titled "Flights of Fancy"(and Leaps of Faith), 2003
72" x 50" Mixed media and oil on canvas.

Milktooth Gallery Exhibition Oct. 1st, 2010

So finally after weeks of work "Almost 60 Owls" is finished and framed. You can see this along with a whole bunch of other local Chicago artist's work at Milktooth Gallery. The gallery is in a huge living space downtown that a friend of mine and her room mates convert into a gallery when the need arises. There will be live music, a DJ, beverages, and sweet snacks in addition to the art.
